In Jackson’s blog he clearly introduced two types of sustainable transport.  He reminded readers that pollution caused by transportation is not limited to air pollution, where noise and water pollution are also worth concerning.

I would like to elaborate a bit more on sustainable transportation in terms of economic factors.  Besides promoting pedestrian and cyclist friendly cities, fuelled transport is still a very large factor in terms of helping reduce people’s carbon footprint.

“The transport system needs to be balanced in favour of sustainable transport modes, giving people a real choice about how they travel.” (NPPF 2012)

 

Alternative Fuels

Over-dependence on oil has been the problem for a long time.  “Transport in Europe is 94% dependent on oil, 84% of it being imported, with a bill up to EUR 1 billion per day, and increasingly costly effects on the environment.” (European Commission, 2017)  Promoting the use of alternative fuels is not a new topic, but many countries are still working hard to meet the standard on increasing the coverage of alternative fuels.  There are four main types of fuels as alternative fuels.

Electricity: Target of having electrical vehicles circulate at least in urban and suburban areas, with minimum of one charging point per ten electric vehicles by 2020. Also to have an EU-wide mobility with a common plug across EU.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Ensure sufficient refuelling points for trucks and ships.  Also publicly accessible points on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) by 2025.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): Similarly, to ensure sufficient publicly accessible refuelling points for CNG vehicles on the TEN-T core network by 2025.

Hydrogen: In member states who opt for hydrogen infrastructure, ensuring a sufficient number of publicly accessible refuelling points by 2025.

 

Economically Sustainable Transport System

Transport can have great impacts on the economy. The economy can be affected in terms of business efficiency, investment, expansion of labour market, flexibility and accessibility of jobs, global mobility, etc. (DfT, 2007; pp.25)
