What is Community-led Housing?

Community-led housing is now growing trend around the world. Although at present it only holds 1% of total housing market of UK. Basically, it is a housing scheme which gives you a sense of living in the community with the people having same interests, professions or age groups. Most of the time these schemes are being run and managed by the community itself. But, there are several different community models are there which are a bit different. Like, co-living.

One of the big difference between co-living and co-housing is that co-living schemes are often have been developed by the private developers which aim to provide a communal living to a specific group of people. Sometimes co-living schemes also have co-working spaces attached to it. Where the hot desks, office cubicles, meeting rooms, conference rooms, seminar rooms are available to hire on rent by hourly, daily or monthly basis. Co-living attracts more of young professionals, Entrepreneurs, artists etc. Which gives them chance to interact and share their knowledge and ideas with others under the same room. It also has shared amenity space where they can arrange different activity and function.

Co-housing is a self-built community-led housing. Community members or future residents design their own scheme according to their needs and interests. They put their private fund or borrow outside funding to start building. Most of the co-housing have common facilities like common kitchen, kitchen garden, laundry, car sharing, kids zone, workshops, and guestrooms. management of the community handled by all the members at the equal level. They decide and divide their daily activities among all the residents. Often workshops are the key to generate income for the community management. Main Aim of co-housing is socialization between residents.


Co-living and co-housing both has same aim of building community but in different ways. co-living is more easy to buy because it does not bind you in a set of specific rules that you have to follow. And co-living is more affordable than co-housing because in co-housing all the maintenance cost they have to pay extra for the mortgage and it also takes a long time to build a final product for co-housing. But, nowadays Intergenerational cohousing communities are emerging to attract wide age group of people.
